Normal forums and online conversation use the same background mechanics as 'forums' - however normal forums (such as the Annoucements forum or your specific group forum on a course page) are not restricted to a timeperiod. You will be able to access any discussion or post in those forums at any time.

Online conversation forums are limited to particular time periods as they are assessed as part of the course you may undertake and need to be completed within set time frames. For example, you may have a Week 1 Online Conversation that needs to be completed between Sunday 10pm before Week 1 and Sunday 10pm after Week 1.
